Tom Hanks experiments with different styles of writing as he portrays various characters. Sometimes, the narrator’s voice rests the same across stories while sometimes the tone and language change drastically when certain perspectives are offered. For example, mediocre actor Rory Thorpe finds a typewriter in “A Junket in the City of Light” and starts typing his recent experience being pulled around Europe without a breath for air. He types, “I was 2 Days into taking the City of Paris by storm, with a 3rd to go, and Day 3 was going to have FIREWORKS!” (61). Clearly, Rory is young and often shows his naivete throughout his dozens of interviews.
