Foreshadowing is a hint of something that will happen later in the story.
In Chapter Five, the last paragraph is an example of foreshadowing. The chapter has been largely upbeat and positive, but in the very last line of the chapter, the author says that loneliness is creeping back into the women's lives. The foreshadowing makes the reader think that other people must come back into the novel's action.
