In the same way that Bosch has a to-the-point, no-nonsense attitude about his work and life, his style of speaking is also very direct and unadorned. This style is exhibited in one of the initial scenes of the novel, when he unceremoniously leaves the discussion with Lucia Soto and her colleagues in order to leave with Bella Lourdes to go investigate the pharmacy double-murder. First, Lourdes, pressed for time, urges him: “‘Harry, come on, I gotta go. You in or out?’” (20). He responds with the quick: “‘Okay, let’s go’” (21). When Lourdes asks about how he will tell Soto and company, he responds with the direct: “‘Fuck them. […] They’ll figure it out’” (21).
