Who is Laporte from Twenty Years After and what is their importance?

Laporte is the King's personal servant who reports to everyone the deplorable conditions that the king is having to live in. His words fall on deaf ears however. In Laporte's mind, however, the King is still royalty and when they all leave Paris, he refuses to ride in the same carriage, choosing to honor the former tradition than to accept the ride.
