D'Artagnan (Twenty Years After) is the main character of the novel. He is the main musketeer and has been one for 20 years. He was called into service by Mazarin mainly because he was in the right place at the right time. One of his first missions was to capture Rochefort who has escaped from jail. He realizes that he has chosen to be on the wrong side of things when he is ordered to assist Cromwell to move against the King. After he helps the King to escape he realizes when he goes back that he will be arrested. After he is arrested he manages to concoct a plan that will give him leverage with the Queen. He is released along with the rest of the rebel musketeers and they were able to create their own group, set to protect the King whenever he should need them.
