Another theme in the book is the desert. Robyn makes it clear that it is not possible to understand the power of the desert unless one is in the heart of it. However, she does describe the area and its majesty with vivid descriptions, giving the reader a glimpse of a world that can only be seen after undergoing great trial to get there. The desert in the middle of Australia is immense and anyone who ventures there alone will have to defend him- or herself from many deadly dangers. Robyn is enchanted by the emptiness and the boundless freedom in every direction.
