What is the deeper meaning behind Grandpa's tears in Chapter Twelve?

Grandpa’s tears stem from being proud of John, as well as from Grandpa accepting what will happen to him because of his diagnosis. The tears are also in recognition that John cannot save him the way he saved the doe.
