In Chapter Ten, the doe becomes a metaphor for Grandpa. The doe is seeking to avoid death by gunshot, as Grandpa has accepted death by cancer. By sparing the deer’s life, John symbolically will spare Grandpa’s life. By choosing not to kill, John is hoping cancer will not kill his grandfather.
