What is the symbolism of the Spirit Bear in the novel, Touching Spirit Bear?

The Spirit Bear is a huge, white bear that is not native to the area. It first appears to Cole when Cole is still furious with his situation and blaming others for his failures. The Spirit Bear appears repeatedly as Cole learns that he has to let go of his anger in order to find peace.
