How does Cole's mother's response to her husband's abuse further Cole's feelings of alienation and anger?

An important aspect of the cycle of abuse is that Cole's mother witnesses the abuse, but she only steps in to try to stop it one time. In all the other instances of abuse, she simply turns away and allows it to happen, furthering Cole's impression that no one cares about him.
