The sight of the mother bird caring for her young made Cole bitter and angry. The mother bird's actions reminded him that he had never had that same care from his own mother, that no one had ever cared for him, and as a result, he was unable to care for anyone else. Cole was alone and lonely... his bitterness and anger the result of envy.
