Dresses are symbols of femininity. Dresses are pieces of clothing generally worn by women. When Bug wears a dress, she feels uncomfortable, as if she is trying to be someone she is not. She sees herself in the mirror wearing a dress and feels as if she is seeing her head floating above someone else’s body. Dresses are also symbols of mismatch in one of Bug’s dreams. She dreams she is being forced to try on dresses that are too small for her, suggesting that dresses, or femininity, are things with which Bug will never be comfortable because they do not fit her.
