How does the author use foreshadowing in Tom Brown's Schooldays?

In Chapter One, we learn that Tom frequently finds himself involved in physical confrontation..... fighting. The narrator's comment regarding Tom's gratitude for having been taught the wrestling move foreshadows his use of the move on at least two later occasions (in Part 1 Chapter 9 and Part 2, Chapter 5).
