Ctein, the leader of the Wranaui and villain of the novel, represents fear and evil. When Kira first comes to learn about Ctein in a dream aboard the Wallfish, she is overcome by a sense of fear that "came from the not the Soft Blade had been bonded with in its memory" (211). Although Kira had never even heard of the great and mighty Ctein before, the Soft Blade attempted to show her this was someone to fear.
