According to Glenna Bell in her article for The Explicator, Lessing uses color to symbolize Susan's descent into madness. The beginning, she notes, "lacks color imagery altogether but, as Susan gradually becomes a more desperate personality, Lessing's references to color become more frequent, more noticeable, and more significant for the understanding of Susan's character."
