Who is Atticus in the book "To Kill a Mockingbird"?

Atticus is Scout and Jem's father. He is descended from one of Maycomb County's oldest and most prominent families. Atticus is a lawyer, as well as a member of the state legislature. He was elected by the townspeople, who respect his honesty, even if they don't always approve of his actions.
