Set in the deep south during the civil rights era and told from the persepctive of a young girl, named Scout Finch, the reader learns of life during this time. Scout offers a unique perspective on the racial unrest that marked this period, especially since it becomes personal for her when her father, Atticus, agrees to defend a black man that is accused of raping a white woman. The entire town ostracizes Atticus and Scout (and her brother Jem).
