What is the theme in To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee?

The main theme in To Kill a Mockingbird is that of good and evil. Are people inherently good or evil? Or is there an inbetween? Atticus looks at this theme repeatedly thoughout the novel, but he never loses his optimism.... the view that good will eventually prevail.
