• In Chapter 12, Jem turns twelve and Scout finds it much harder to communicate with him.

• Scout receives a letter from Dill saying he has a new father and won't visit this summer.

• Atticus leaves for a couple of weeks to work at the state legislature and Cal brings Jem and Scout to church with her. One woman raises a ruckus that two white children are in their church but Cal assures her that these children her company.

• Jem and Scout question Cal about her double life. She speaks "proper" English when they are together, but speaks very differently when she is with her congregation. Cal tries to explain that she would be putting on airs to speak any other way.
