In the first chapter, we learn that Maycomb is an old town, tired out by the Depression and economic hardship. The weather was generally hot, the townspeople moved slowly, and a day seemed longer than it actually was. No one had a destination, and no one had any money, but there were people who still help onto a sense of hope.
