In Chapters 7-9, why does Jem become interested in the contents of the knothole?

At first, Jem is curious about the origin of the gifts they find in the knot-hole.... who left them? Who are they for? Later, he realizes the gifts are being left for both him and Scout. After realizing who their for, Jem becomes evermore intersted in the giver.
