Atticus doesn't shoot Tom Robinson; he shoots Tim Johnson (the town's stray dog). When Jem witnesses this he realizes many things about his father, the least of which is that his father is a gentleman and the best shot in town. He is able to see that Tate respects his father and that further elevates him in Jem's eyes.
