Who is Max from Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy and what is their importance?

Max was a Czech who worked at the Circus. Prideaux asked for his assistance in gathering information about Jim. Max believes that Jim informed on the Czech network in order to gain his own release from prison. He also believes that Jim is bitter about the nine members of the network that were killed.
