Black were given the jobs that white soldiers refused to do. The jobs were dangerous, and the black soldiers were bullied by their white peers. After the explosion at Port 50, Marshall defended the soldiers charged with mutiny.

Joe Small leads his fellow soldiers in their refusal to continue working in dangerous circumstances. He was arrested with the others.
