The perspective of this book is mainly told in first person. Levon Helm tells the story of his life from the cotton fields of Arkansas to the rock and roll life of a musician. Levon is the main story teller in this book but on several occasions he allows his fellow band mates and friends to tell their own stories in their own words, as best they remember them. They include their own backgrounds as to where they grew up and how they came to know the Band as well as any funny stories they might want to tell about the Band members.
