The price of fame is a major theme. The price of fame for the boys of The Band ultimately is much higher than any of them expect; it costs them life-long friendships and even one of them his own life. When the The Band begins they want it to be a combination of all their musical abilities, not for one person's light to shine brighter than anyone else's. They share in the creativity of the songs, although they all credit Robbie with most of the lyrics, and who plays what instruments. They do not want a lead singer or a "front man," someone who has more of a say in what they do or play than the others.
