What techniques does the author use to tell the main body of the story?

The author uses a frame story with Clay as the narrator to tell the main body of the story. Clay tells us Hannah's story, using the record she left behind..... her tapes. Hannah's tapes, or her words, are italicized, thus distinguishing her story from Clay's narration.
