In the novel, hugging symbolizes the value of emotional vulnerability. Throughout much of the novel, Cassie believes that if she shows emotional vulnerability in any way, then the male firefighters will view her as weak. Fortunately, whenever she does show emotional vulnerability, the male firefighters offer emotionally support in forms such a kind words and offers of hugs. These moments emphasize the inherent necessity of emotionally vulnerability/support.
