Mittie Williams was a house slave at the end of the Civil War. She stayed with Miss Eliza all the time because Miss Eliza was afraid of the Union soldiers. Mittie Williams told her story years later. Her words were used to make this volume possible. Mittie was quoted at the beginning of the book. She talked about the fear of the South. At the end of the volume she was mentioned again. There wasn't much about Mittie. She represented a whole Southern nation.
