The blind-date book that Mateo leaves on the train serves as a symbol for the interconnectedness of people in the novel. Mateo leaves the book, saying “I don’t know who will find this. But isn’t it cool knowing someone will if we leave it here?” (266). Right after leaving the book, another Decker, Zoe Landon, picks up the book and the reader is given a brief look at her life. This interaction between the characters, and the book that provides the interaction, serves as a strong example of how linked everyone’s lives are in the novel. Throughout the novel, Silvera provides small vignettes of other characters, connecting their stories to each other in order to highlight how characters’ fates cross. Thus, the book serves as a physical representation of the interconnectedness of life.
