In Scene I, Foote uses several instances of foreshadowing to introduce the plot. Will comments about his relationships with the banks, foreshadowing his ongoing efforts to borrow money.

Another instance of foreshadowing occurs when Lily make derogatory comments about Eleanor Roosevelt, foreshadowing her obsession with Roosevelt's actions and perceived wrongdoings.
