One major metaphor in The Yearling is that of the deer, itself. It is like Jody's childhood, and his eventual maturing into a young man. They parallell each other. In the end, when he ends up killing Flag it is a leaving behind of the innocence of childhood. His return home shows that he has accepted that he is no longer a child.
