What metaphors are used in The World According to Garp by John Irving?

The Under Toad is an inside joke between Helen and Garp. It was originally used when Garp went to the beech as a child: he was supposed to look out for the undertow in the ocean. It later became a metaphor for anxiety and the darkness of life.
