The Big Issue is the homeless magazine that Bowen sells for income. The magazine was founded by a charismatic man named John Bird. Its mission is to advantage disadvantaged citizens, granting them a healthy avenue towards rehabilitation. Throughout the text, Bowen's work with The Big Issue features heavily. Although he supports the magazine's mission, he is often frustrated with their policies and rule enforcement workers. After he is given two undue suspensions in a row, Bowen decides to quit the organization for good in order to focus on things that bring out the best rather than the worst in him.
