What did the Jewish people do while in captivity that defines their need to discover meanings behind events?

Through the prophets, God cajoled the nations of Israel and Judah to no avail, finally allowing them to be overcome. In the process, the Jewish propensity for digging for meaning became more important. Not to do so would have been a tacit acceptance that the gods of the conquerors were more powerful than Yahweh.
