What kinds of losses does Mattie endure?

Mattie endures many hardships and losses throughout her life. She gives up her family when she gets pregnant, running away from her father's anger. She lives in awful conditions when she can find shelter, and often finds herself depending on others when there is nowhere else to turn. When Mattie finally establishes a home, she loses it when her son jumps bail, bail guaranteed with her home.
