The journal represents the bond that Alex and Conner are still able to share with their father although he is deceased. When Alex and Conner arrive in the fairy tale land, Froggy suggests using the journal as it is highly detailed on how to obtain all of the items for the Wishing Spell. Alex and Conner's father wrote it when he was trying to find a way back to the real world as he had fallen in love with their mother and wanted to stay with her. Alex and Conner do not find out that the journal is their father's until the end of the novel when it is also revealed that the Fairy Godmother is actually Grandma.
