The curvy tree is one of the representations of the truth about Alex and Conner's father and of the bond between them that is continued after his death. When Alex would be upset about not fitting in with her classmates, her father would cheer her up telling her the story of the curvy tree. The curvy tree grew up in a forest, but was curvy. Because of the way it looked, it was never chopped down like the other ones. Because of this, the tree was able to survive because of its uniqueness. As Alex and Conner travel through the fairy tale land, they see the curvy tree that they had always just thought was one of their father's more imaginative stories. Through seeing this, they begin to come to the conclusion that their father must have lived here when he was younger.
