The novel, The Wishing Spell, portrays the family role between stepmother and stepdaughter as strained given the murder attempts made by the Evil Queen according to other fairy tales. In the Prologue, Snow White comes to the Evil Queen to try to understand the queen's actions. It is apparent that Snow White is extremely curious about the queen's motivation for trying to kill her. The Queen is not interested in hearing Snow White's proclamations of wanting to be a family, although Snow White is insistent that she tried to love her as a real mother. Instead, the Evil Queen reveals that her hatred actually has more to do with the love of someone else.
