Who is Peyto from The Winthrop Woman and what is their importance?

Peyto is Harry's Egyptian companion. He returns with Harry Winthrop from Barbados and is his devoted servant. Over the course of the novel, Peyto is accused of witchcraft, and the townspeople burn his donkey. Jack helps Harry and Bess arrange for Peyto's escape.
