In the opening chapters, the author foreshadows the influence Merlin will have in the young boy's life via his dire prophecy, and the stark difference between the simple poverty of Brude and Sula compared to the opulence of Morgause's castle symbolizes the drastic change Mordred undergoes on an emotional level as well.
