Effects of War is a recurring idea. The Wednesday Wars is set in 1967, and as a result, a primary theme in the novel is that of the Vietnam War and its effect on everyone from young children to adults. In the beginning of the novel, Holling realizes little of the war, other than the fact it exists and many of his teachers' husbands are away, fighting.
