Momaday uses flashbacks, memories, and cultural stories, along with his own experiences to weave together a narrative journey of the mind and body. He grew up among the Pueblo Indians, but also felt as if he belonged to the Kiowa culture because they were his grandmother's people. His discovery of their beliefs gave him additional information about himself and his family's choices.
