Who is Dr. Crane from The Waves and what is their importance?

As headmaster at the boy's boarding school, Dr. Crane is an important figure in that he represents different things to each of them. Neville sees him as a hate figure, Louis sees him as the epitome of Englishness, and Bernard uses him to make up stories.
