Who is Dr Crane from The Waves and what is their importance?

Dr. Crane is the boarding school's headmaster. He is an important figure, who represents different things to each of the three boys. Neville sees him as a hate figure, Louis sees him as the epitome of Englishness, and Bernard uses him as a muse to make up stories.
