Who is Louis from The Waves and what is their importance?

Louis is described as an outsider. He insecurity about his Australian background leads him to malign his heritage, as well as his father's occupation. This insecurity, however, is also a major part of his appeal.

Louis is intelligent and hard working..... he's at the top of his class. He does not, hoerever, go onto university with Neville and Bernard, but rather, chooses to go to work as a clerk. Part of his decision is based upon the bullying he received at school, but a major reason can be found in the fact that he will be working among people he sees as more on his level.
