Laurie is most concerned about the writer’s safety. Even though everyone she knows personally enjoys The Wave, she is able to think abstractly about how the ‘game’ might affect those who choose not to play. Her ability to extend empathy, even to people she doesn’t know, makes Laurie the hero of the story.
