Ada has been raised in an isolated fashion because her mother is embarrassed by her club foot. Mam is also abusive to her daughter..... Ada does not know love or compassion. When Ada goes to live with Susan, she is overcome by Susan's compassion, the things Susan does for her, and the very different way she is treated. Her past, however, makes her suspicious of Susan because she has been raised to believe that she has no worth.
