Ada’s mother comments on Ada's independence and willfulness, warning her that she shouldn’t fight back too much against her mother because her mother can make life even more miserable.

"Then I did what I should have done to start with. I taught myself to walk.”

When Ada realized she couldn’t make Jamie stay in the apartment with her, she decided to teach herself how to walk, so she could go to him.
