Duality is a major idea in the novel “The Violent Bear It Away” by Flannery O’Connor. Duality –the idea of two alternatives – comes into play in various places in the novel, in terms of absolutes, the number two, and two either mutually-exclusive, or compatible, alternatives. All of these instances of duality revolve, in some way, around Tarwater and his destiny to become a prophet.
